NPDES Non-Point Source Permits

What is NPDES?

The NPDES Permit Program addresses water quality by regulating point and non-point sources that discharge regulated substances into waters of the United States. Created in 1972 by the Clean Water Act, the NPDES permit program is authorized to state governments by EPA to perform many permitting, administrative, and enforcement aspects of the program.  The three significant categories of NPDES permit holders in this region include: 1) Municipal Wastewater; 2) Industrial Wastewater; and 3) Stormwater.

Stormwater NPDES permit holders develop stormwater management programs to manage polluted runoff (non-point source pollution) commonly transported via their stormwater systems. Typical methods of conveying stormwater runoff include storm drains, channels, ditches, pipes, etc.  Stormwater NPDES permits regulate stormwater discharges via systems that are entirely separate from municipal sewer and/or wastewater systems.

You can do your part.  Prevent oils, solvents, fertilizers, herbicides and other harmful chemicals from being washed down storm drains.
